A Malaysian man recently shared his distressing experience crossing the Thailand-Malaysia border, where he said he was accused of wrongdoing by Thai Immigration officers.

He explained that entering Thailand was no problem, but he was stopped by officers when exiting the country at the Betong border.

“This is a reminder for all Malaysians”

In a TikTok video posted by the man, @therealsurresh, he claimed he was detained by Thai Immigration officers and was told that his passport had no entry stamp, meaning he entered Thailand illegally.

He explained that while Malaysia uses digital verification, Thai checkpoints still rely heavily on manual stamping.

“When I entered, everything looked normal. But when I was leaving, they detained me. They said my passport wasn’t stamped, so technically I never entered Thailand. It felt like a syndicate, all working together to make money off us, that was their ‘strategy’,” he said.

He also mentioned meeting about five or six other travellers that same day who went through the exact same thing, describing the situation as anything but accidental.

“They demanded RM500 on the spot”

Suresh claimed the officers first tried to intimidate travellers by mentioning a supposed “protocol fine” of THB25,000 (~RM3,193), before later pulling them aside for negotiations.

“Every case was the same, no stamp. I told them it wasn’t my fault, but instead it was their officer’s responsibility,” he said.

He recalled a separate incident a month earlier when he was stopped and asked to pay THB10,000 (~RM1,277).

He also alleged that officers would take different victims to separate office locations to avoid raising suspicion.

“They’d take you into their office to ‘talk’ and demand RM500 on the spot. My wife went through the same thing. It wasn’t just one person; multiple people were targeted that day,” he added.

“For anyone crossing into Thailand, make sure your passport is stamped before leaving the counter. Take a picture if you have to. If they haven’t stamped it, make sure you get them to do so.”
