As part of the study programmes offered in Malaysia, most students would have to go through an internship before completing their studies. The purpose of the internship is to allow students to have hands-on training where they can use the skills they’ve learned.
Generally, internships offer a salary, but an anonymous post by a local company on Facebook painted a different picture.
“We don’t pay salaries for internships. Internships are for you to learn. By right, intern students should pay the company for teaching them the job.”
The message then continued to mention how an intern would gain experience and knowledge from the company. They said that many companies that hire interns and pay them only want “cheap labour” and will not impart any wisdom.
“Do you want money or knowledge?”, they said.
They then ended the message by saying that imparting knowledge to interns is their speciality, which caused many netizens to react to the message.
A netizen shared her experience when she was interning. She shared how her boss told her that her first month in the company would be on a no-pay basis and she’s still in ‘training’.
Another netizen commented on how this company wants free labour.
A company should always pay their interns as they’re still helping you with their assigned tasks. As the saying goes, nothing in life is ever free.
