A group of Malaysians in Thailand was arrested by local police after being found guilty of illegal street racing.

The arrests followed complaints from residents near Greenway Night Market in Hat Yai, who reported loud noises and traffic obstruction caused by the racers on the night of May 17, according to Thai media.

The local spotted a few Malaysian-registered cars racing illegally on the streets in Hat Yai.

It didn’t take long for the police to act. Around 11 am, approximately 10 individuals—men and women aged between 21 and 25—were tracked down and brought to the police station. Authorities had a clear intention: to educate them on Thailand’s traffic laws.

With the help of a translator, the group received a stern lecture. Following that, they were issued fines.

All six vehicles involved—including Honda Civic Type Rs and Mercedes-Benz cars—were seized. The youths faced four charges:

  • driving in a manner that obstructs traffic,
  • reckless driving,
  • unauthorized vehicle modifications with non-compliant parts,
  • incomplete required vehicle equipment.

According to Khaosod, the Malaysians apologised for their behavior and promised not to repeat the offense. They also expressed remorse using the traditional Thai wai gesture as a sign of respect.

Following the incident, the group reportedly returned to Malaysia immediately.

Police Colonel Apichat Wannako, Commander of the Kho Hong Police Station, issued a reminder to foreign visitors driving in Thailand.

He emphasised the importance of respecting local traffic laws and urged tour guides and travel operators—especially those catering to Malaysian, Indonesian, and Singaporean tourists—to ensure their clients are well-informed and compliant with Thai regulations.

Wherever you are, always abide by local laws and regulations. Respect the road, respect the people.
