It’s pretty common for some of us to have our eyes glued to the phone screen while waiting for the light to turn green, as long as we don’t text and drive.

However, we should keep in mind at all times that dangers lurk everywhere. Using your phone at the traffic light may not be a good idea after all. On 31 May, a 36-year-old man became an unfortunate victim of theft when he was on his phone at a traffic light in PJS3, Petaling Jaya.

At around 7:10 pm, while at the traffic light, he rolled down his window and used his phone while waiting for the red light to turn green. What he did not see coming was a motorcyclist who stopped beside him and immediately snatched his device before zooming away. The victim tried to pursue the thief but he managed to escape.

The thief did not stay free for long.

Just yesterday (2 June), PDRM in Petaling Jaya released a statement and said that they have managed to apprehend the 28-year-old suspect at Petaling Jaya Trade Center, Damansara Perdana. The police have confiscated a mobile phone which was believed to be the item of robbery, as well as a motorcycle used during the incident and some clothes.

Further investigations also revealed that the suspect has 18 previous criminal records which involved robbery, vehicle theft, stealing, and causing harm during robbery. In the meantime, he also holds 3 records of drug abuse.

The suspect is currently being remanded from 1 June till 6 June for further investigations.

We would like to thank PDRM for their prompt actions and hopefully, this will serve as a reminder for every driver out there to be careful and alert to your surroundings, especially when your vehicle is not moving.
