For a Malaysian medical graduate, his duties began immediately after receiving his graduation scroll as he jumped into action to assist someone facing a medical emergency the moment he walked out of his convocation.
According to a Facebook post by Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), a medical graduate from their Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FPSK), Muhammad Husni Abu Bakar, had helped administer emergency aid to an elderly woman who had passed out outside the UPM convocation hall, while he was still donning his mortarboard and gown.

UPM wrote, “The 49th UPM Convocation Ceremony was an extraordinary experience for Muhammad Husni Abu Bakar, a Medical Doctor graduate from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FPSK), when he unexpectedly helped provide initial treatment to an elderly person who collapsed as soon as he left the hall.”
“His quick response to assess the victim’s condition using the basic principles of ABC (Airway, Breathing and Circulation) emergency, helping to improve breathing and managing the surrounding area, had attracted the attention of many.”
Utilising the knowledge he garnered during his studies
They went on to highlight how Muhammad Husni knew exactly what to do in that situation, as he immediately assisted the elderly woman before she was taken to a hospital for treatment.
“By staying calm and using the clinical knowledge he had learned, he assessed the victim’s pulse, response level and respiratory condition before the family took the woman to the hospital for further treatment. Muhammad Husni also advised the public not to panic in emergencies, and instead, do basic checks and seek help from skilled individuals,” they explained.
UPM added that Muhammad Husni, who is currently undergoing medical graduate training at the Seri Manjung Hospital in Perak, knew he wanted to pursue medicine since he was in Form 3, and that interest only grew stronger after he, unfortunately, lost his father to Covid-19.
“His story on his Convocation Day not only highlights his calmness and concern as a medical graduate, but also depicts the soul of a young doctor who wants to make a difference in the lives of others.”
