A local man has been arrested by the police after he had set fire to a tow truck belonging to the Johor Bahru City Council (MBJB) at a vehicle storage depot at the Johor Bahru Waterfront.

According to a press statement by the Johor Bahru Selatan District Police, Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat, the incident took place at about 11:07 AM on Friday (August 15), due to the suspect being unhappy that his Perodua Axia had been towed by MBJB the day before.

“The suspect, who did not have the money to pay the compound, was asked to appeal, but he felt that the process was difficult for him before acting outside of the law,”

“The results of a review of the closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage found that the suspect had poured petrol and set fire to the MBJB tow truck, causing a fire with an estimated loss of around RM10,000,” he explained.

The suspect is now in more trouble than he was before

The police arrested the suspect on the same day, at about 1:06 PM, and seized several items, including an aluminium can and a lighter.

“Further investigations found that the suspect has a past record of offences under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. The results of a urine test were negative for drugs,”

“The suspect is now remanded for 5 days until Tuesday for investigations under Section 435 of the Penal Code for committing mischief by fire. If convicted, he can be sentenced to up to 7 years in prison and a fine,” he added.

Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat also stressed that taking the law into one’s own hands is a serious act that can threaten life, property and public order.
