Earlier, composer and singer Muhammad Yasin Sulaiman was charged with distributing cannabis at a condominium in Kota Damansara on March 24, 2022.

The Court of Appeal today (April 28) acquitted and freed the singer, ordering that he be sent back to Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta in Perak, where he’ll stay until the Sultan of Selangor gives his approval, according to Harian Metro.

He was previously sentenced to life in prison

The Court of Appeal’s decision today basically threw out the Shah Alam High Court’s earlier ruling that sentenced Yasin to life in prison and 16 strokes of the cane after he was found guilty of three drug-related charges.

A panel of judges, led by Justice Che Mohd Ruzima Ghazali, along with Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah and Datuk Azmi Ariffin, made the call after accepting Yasin’s final appeal.

Back on August 22 last year, High Court Judge Datuk Norsharidah Awang sentenced Yasin after allowing the prosecution’s appeal against the Petaling Jaya Sessions Court’s earlier decision to acquit and free him.

Yasin, who had been placed at Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta, Perak, with the Sultan of Selangor’s approval, was handcuffed and sent straight to Kajang Prison after the ruling.

He was found guilty of 3 charges

Yasin was first charged with having 193.7 grams of cannabis at his condo in Kota Damansara, under Section 6 and punishable under Section 39A(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

For the second charge, he was accused of growing 17 cannabis plants in plastic pots at the same place, and charged under Section 6B(1)(a), punishable under Section 6B(3).

The final charge was for taking the drug ’11-nor-delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol-9-carboxylic acid’ into his body, charged under Section 15(1)(a) and punishable under Section 15(1).
