While the cry for a work-life balance continues in Malaysia, it seems that those working abroad have the luxury to taste what it’s like to enjoy a work-life balance.

On his Twitter post, a Malaysian named Alif, who works in New Zealand shared how the work-life balance works there, and let’s just say, it’s a far cry from the work culture in Malaysia. You’d wish you were there in New Zealand, especially if you preach about coming to work and leaving on time.

“No work calls after 3:30pm”

When it comes to work, Alif said that people in NZ go to work early so they can leave on time, and no, we’re not talking about leaving work at 5 pm.

“By 3:30 pm, everyone is gone. Don’t worry about WhatsApp group for work, no one will text about work outside working hours.”

It’s mandatory for us to provide an MC if we’re calling in for sick leave but in NZ, things work differently. Alif said that while everyone is entitled to sick leave, there is no need for an MC there.

“You can apply for sick leave without a document, and without disclosing your illness.”

The dress code is also something equally important at the workplace but in NZ, there’s a bit of a leniency, even for those who work in the government sector. As long as you’re not at the front desk, you’re allowed to wear shorts at your workplace!

Some flexibility like what’s mentioned above is truly a blessing in disguise but there’s something else that defines a good working place – a non-toxic working environment. According to his tweet, Alif said that there is no gap when it comes to the relationship between the superiors and the employees in daily tasks.

Speaking to WORLD OF BUZZ, Alif said that he has been working as a finance executive in the accounting department for 10 months now. To him, the work culture in Malaysia is definitely incomparable to what he’s experiencing.

“I worked for a private bank back in Malaysia. The unofficial working hour was like 9 am to 9 pm.”

When asked if Malaysia should follow suit, Alif told WORLD OF BUZZ that it would be great if Malaysia adapt the culture in NZ.

“You’ll definitely see an increase in productivity and work satisfaction because the employees are happy,” Alif explained.

We cannot stress enough how work-life balance is so relevant, especially in today’s world where work can be hectic, regardless of your career field. Do you think Malaysia should follow suit and implement a work culture like what the people in NZ do?
