At least 20 victims from Malaysia and neighbouring countries have reportedly been deceived by celebrity endorsements and low prices on luxury items such as handbags, perfumes and more, only to receive counterfeit goods..

According to a report by Oriental Daily, the live streamers allegedly duping people online with these counterfeit goods are apparently Malaysians living abroad.

At least 20 victims allegedly duped by Malaysian livestreamers living abroad

The livestreamers are said to sell products by live streaming in brand-name discount malls, while using internet celebrities to endorse their products.

They also reportedly use discounts to attract netizens into placing orders.

A victim speaks out

One of the victims, a 55-year-old businesswoman, shared that she came across the livestream through social media, and after seeing a celebrity promoting the products, she decided to make a purchase.

“I bought some items, but because I didn’t know how to identify them, I thought they were good, so I kept placing orders. After a few months of not buying from them, I went to their livestream again in January of this year to place an order, and there were still celebrities promoting the products,” she said.

She had purchased over 20 bags from them, amounting to RM25,000.

However, after buying a Louis Vuitton handbag that arrived looking different from what she saw online, she realised that she had been cheated.

“I contacted the other party to raise questions, but they were unable to provide an appraisal report. After repeated inquiries, they finally agreed to let me return the product and provide me with a refund. After I discovered I had been scammed, I joined a group of victims and called on others to report to the police and hold a press conference,” she added.
