Anything for the Gram, but not everything is appropriate for a picture.

An ongoing trend on social media sees users posing for a photo of themselves climbing and clinging to road signs and lamp posts. Unfortunately, more Malaysians are following the trend by posting images of themselves performing similar acts for a post on TikTok and Instagram.

“Disrespectful and indecent actions”

The Kuching City Council in Sarawak (DBKU) is well aware of this trend, and the local authority has broken the silence about the matter, which it dubbed “immoral” and “dangerous.”

In its statement today (12 November), DBKU reminded others that pasting any material, such as stickers or posters, on the road signs without permission is also an offence under By-law 22(1)(b), and the Local Authorities (Cleanliness) By-laws, 1999.

If convicted, the offender can be fined up to RM1,500, with an additional fine of up to RM3,000 for subsequent offences, or nine months’ imprisonment for each subsequent offence.

“Following the disrespectful and indecent actions by the individual involved, DBKU will file a police report for further investigation under laws relating to public order,” the statement explained.

DBKU also stressed that such acts are a serious violation of public etiquette and morals and will not be compromised. The public is advised to respect public facilities and maintain good conduct for the sake of common well-being, to ensure that Kuching City remains clean, safe, and livable.

So, what do you guys think of DBKU’s statement? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.
