The beautiful Indonesian island of Bali is one of the most popular global tourist destinations in the world, with many travellers globally visiting the island throughout the year.

The sheer amount of tourists visiting can cause inconvenience for travellers at the island’s Ngurah Rai International Airport though, with long queues practically expected as they pass through the Indonesian Immigration at the airport.

Well, passing through immigration in Bali just got a lot easier for Malaysians as Ngurah Rai International Airport recently announced that its newly installed autogates are now officially up and running.

Available at the international arrival and departure terminals of the airport, the autogate is not only available for use for Indonesian citizens but also for several other countries, including Malaysia!

Available to use for visitors from ASEAN nations and eVOA holders

In an Instagram post, Ngurah Rai International Airport said that the automated clearance through the autogate facilities is available for those using the eVisa on arrival (eVOA) scheme and free visa subject countries, which include ASEAN nations below:

  • Brunei
  • Cambodia
  • Laos
  • Myanmar
  • The Philippines
  • Singapore
  • Timor Leste
  • Thailand
  • Vietnam
  • Malaysia

If you’re a Malaysian or a passport holder of any of the free visa subject nations above, you can use the autogate facilities by first registering online through the official Indonesian website here.

Do note that this feature is only available for Electronic Passports, which thankfully, Malaysian passports are!!

Meanwhile, if you’re not a citizen of nations that Indonesia doesn’t recognise as free visa subject countries or if you’re planning to use an eVOA to stay longer in Bali and Indonesia (valid for up to 60 days, with an extension of 30 days after the first 30 days), you can still use the autogate facilities by registering for an eVOA or eVISA here.

Indonesia’s effort to ‘level up’ its immigration services

As shared by The Bali Sun, the autogate facilities at Ngurah Rai International Airport are part of Indonesia’s nationwide effort to level up the country’s immigration services and to digitalise operations for both citizens and foreigners. The same autogates are also available at the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport near the nation’s capital of Jakarta.

As for the autogates in Bali, there are now 90 autoages in total, 60 in the arrival halls and 30 in the departure halls of the Ngurah Rai International Airport.

This is much welcomed, given that the Bali airport welcomes 18,000 tourists every day on average and up to 36,000 per day during peak season.
