Over the past couple of years, drone-flying has become an increasingly popular hobby among Malaysians. It’s not uncommon to see people flying their drones around neighbourhoods and parks nowadays to capture the beauty of the surrounding scenery.

However, drone fans and users should be aware that they need to purchase a permit from the relevant authorities before taking their drone out to fly in public places.

While the hobby is technically allowed under the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM), those who fly their drones in selected public spaces without a permit could be given a minimum fine of RM50,000 or face three years in jail or a combination of both these sentences.

According to the Malaysian Civil Aviation Regulations 2016 (MCAR 2016), a maximum fine of RM100,000 can be imposed on corporate organisations who fail to apply for this permit.

If you haven’t registered your drone for a permit yet, don’t worry. The process is relatively simple. All you have to do is follow these three steps:

  1. Log on to CAAM’s website
  2. Download the registration form and fill in the details for your drone
  3. Send in the completed application to YM.VOG.MAACobfsctd-8e4200@TFA.ENORD

Applications are typically processed in 14 days so if you plan on flying your drone right after you make your purchase, be sure to apply for your permit early!

It’s always better to be safe than sorry. If you’re an active drone user who hasn’t applied for a permit yet, register for one today on CAAM’s website.
