Criticisms can be important for us to move further and improve ourselves. But what happens when criticism has gone too far to the extent that it humiliates others?

The incident where a professor in a local university insulted B40 students has gone viral and many have since expressed their take on the incident. Some agreed that the lecturer has taken things too far, while others think that the generation nowadays are unfit for criticism.

A Facebook post from the professor’s previous student, defending the professor, is going viral.

“That’s her teaching methodology. It’s bitter, but we accepted it. That’s how weak the students in this era of TikTok are. You haven’t seen the criticism when you’re out there working.”

The man also said that the lecturer has nothing to lose but the student who uploaded the video will regret it one day later.

To that, one of MUDA’s co-founders, Lim Wei Jiet also expressed his take on the incident. Wei Jiet has been with the corporate sector for 7 years now and according to him, criticisms on work quality should be expected.

“However, it is not acceptable if your boss insults your economic situation. If you are trapped in this toxic environment, I suggest you leave the workplace and get yourself a new job. It’s not worth it,” Lim advised.

Of being strict and rude

Netizens have also commented on Wei Jiet’s post and agreed that there’s a fine line between being strict and being rude.

“My rule of thumb. If you’re going to scold or insult, make sure it’s only about the job. But if it involves other matters then you should fight back.”

“I was once scolded for my bad handwriting and my boss told me no one is going to hire me for that.”

For illustration purposes only.

When we’re out working with society, we can’t expect everything to be a walk in the park. Criticisms are bound to happen but constructive criticisms will shape us into someone better and wiser.

However, when the criticism involves our family or even our personal lives, do you think we should swallow the criticism & move on? Or do we fight back for our dignity?
