Pulai Member of Parliament (MP) Suhaizan Kaiat has come up with a rather interesting proposal to help cater to the sensitivity of Muslim workers at convenience stores that sell alcoholic beverages.

Posing a question to the Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Islamic Affairs) Zulkifli Hasan at the Dewan Rakyat today, Suhaizan said that he was saddened at seeing Muslim cashiers and workers at convenience stores that sell alcoholic beverages in our country.

He then asked whether the Federal Government has any mechanisms to allow for these workers to still work at these convenience stores but without having to handle these alcoholic beverages, which is forbidden in Islam.

The Pulai MP then proposed,

“For example, we could discuss with the municipal or city council to create a guideline so that the selling of alcoholic beverages via vending machines. Hence, they (Muslim workers) don’t have to directly sell alcoholic beverages.”
