Something amazing recently took place in Sabah, and the pictures are honestly blowing our minds!
According to The Star, a rare natural phenomenon known as “light pillars” just took place earlier this morning in none other than Kudat, Sabah.
Light pillars occur when light bounces off flat ice crystals in the air close to the ground. The light pillars tend to take on the colour of the light source, no matter what hue it is.

This phenomenon typically occurs in cold, arctic regions, which is why it’s even more special to witness the beautiful sight right here in Malaysia.

Similar to the Aurora phenomenon, light pillars dazzle the night sky with bright and vivid colours, and it’s quite a trippy sight to behold!

This natural phenomenon occurred near Pulau Kelambu, near the tip of Borneo.
When a group of local photographers spotted the gorgeous phenomenon taking place right before their very eyes, it felt like fate had brought them there at just the right time.

The photographers reportedly first spotted the light pillars last night (21st June) at around 9pm and they began to fade at around 1am this morning (22nd June).
“We were surprised to be greeted by the display of vertical colourful lights. It was magnificent. It is definitely a moment to treasure in our lives,” said Andrew JK Tan, the leader of the photography group, Mentography.
Since the photos are already so breathtaking, we can’t imagine how beautiful this sight must have been in person!
The last time a similar phenomenon was spotted here was two years ago in Kota Kinabalu. Guess it’s time to book a flight to Sabah!
