Baju kelawar is a traditional nightwear for women. Because it’s so baggy at the sides, M’sians have named it ‘baju kelawar’ as it resembles a bat flapping its wings.
However, the nightwear is being worn for all kinds of reasons aside from their sole purpose these days.
Recently, a 35-year-old lorry driver was arrested after allegedly committing a crime in Taman Ria Heights, Tawau, Sabah. The suspect was seen robbing a house dressed up as a woman.

The owner of the house had dropped her mother off at work and returned home just to find the front gate half-open.
At least the perpetrator had some decency by taking off his footwear before entering someone’s home as the victim claimed that she found a pair of slippers outside the main door which were bigger than any pair she owns.
“Upon realising the break-in, the frightened owner fled to her car and contacted her relatives for help” Tawau OCPD Assistant Commissioner Peter Umbuas stated on behalf of the victim.
While safe in the car, the owner saw a ‘woman’ dressed in baju kelawar, wearing a headscarf with a mask on, scramming out of the house. She then immediately alerted her neighbours as the suspect fled in his car.
According to The DailyExpress, ACP Peter stated that neighbours who were walking about in the area chased after the perpetrator.
During his escape, the suspect crashed his car in frantic. Neighbourhood heroes rushed to apprehend him before handing him over to the authorities.
Much to their surprise, upon detaining the suspect, the heroes learned that it was no ‘woman’ but instead a cross-dressed man.
They further found items including cash and accessories that sum up to about RM150 in the thief’s pockets.
Just when we thought the baju kelawar hype has died down, M’sians has found another way to bring it back infamously. What’s next though?
