It’s common knowledge that taxi drivers are hating on ride-hailing apps as they say that their businesses are being taken away from them; but to what extent, exactly?

A recent post by a Malaysian netizen on Facebook highlighted this problem and it received many comments from other users who have experienced the “pleasure” of taking a taxi ride in Malaysia.
The original poster said, “Taxi drivers’ livelihood is in danger, almost 90 per cent of the drivers who rent their cabs are losing their source of income, we can’t even earn RM60 a day. This has caused many taxi drivers to be unable to pay for their weekly rental fees. A lot of them had their taxis towed away by the company and even got blacklisted. Who can we blame for this?”

The debate for this issue has been going on for some time and when the netizen brought up this issue again, most of the commenters criticised taxi services. The gist of their comments is that most were complaining about the services, saying, “A lot of taxis are cheating people, they refuse to use their meters, their cars are old and dirty, plus the fares are just so expensive compared to ride-hailing apps. Of course people would choose the cheaper option!”
There were some people who tried to defend the taxi drivers and said that not all of them are the same. Of course there are good taxi drivers too! However, the majority of them slammed the taxi drivers as their previous experiences have not been the best.

Some of them even advised the taxi drivers to leave the companies and enter ride-hailing companies instead.
