Beware fellow Malaysians, another fiasco may ensue.
Power Rangers director, Dean Israelite, recently revealed that there is a small ‘pivotal’ scene that shows that Trini the Yellow Power Ranger, played by Becky G, is gay.
The moment comes when another character assumes that Trini has ‘boyfriend problems’ but after awhile realises that it’s actually ‘girlfriend problems’.
I don’t know about you but the whole Beauty and the Beast fiasco is still upsetting so I sure hope a nightmare won’t repeat itself.
Israelite said that for Trini, she’s really questioning who she is.
“She hasn’t fully figured it out yet. I think what’s great about that scene and what that scene propels for the rest of the movie is, ‘That’s OK.’ The movie is saying, ‘That’s OK,’ and all of the kids have to own who they are and find their tribe.”
Netizens have commented on the issue:
“I swear if they ban Power Rangers I’m done. Like seriously done. You can take away my Beauty & The Beast but don’t you dare interfere with my Power Rangers.”
“It’s Morph… Banning Time!”
“I don’t see why they ought to bother doing so if it’s already clear in the movie anyway, except as a way to generate publicity by courting controversy.”
If it’s a slick way to generate publicity then… not okay.
Openly gay actor David Yost portrayed the Blue Ranger in the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers television series but left the series after being harassed for his sexuality.
“They really stepped up to the plate,” Yost said in regards to the film’s representation. “I think so many people in the LGBTQI community are going to be excited to see that representation.”
The original Yellow Ranger, played by the late Thuy Trang, was represented as straight.
So what are your thoughts on the issue? Will people get offended and cause problems? I hope not. Fingers crossed!
