The Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) is urging the public to abandon the dirty and disgusting habit of spitting in public spaces.

Taking to their Facebook page, they shared how they are enforcing a ‘no spitting’ rule around Kuala Lumpur to ensure hygiene and cleanliness.

No more “Hawk Tuah” in Kuala Lumpur

DBKL added that it is implementing a Special Action Ops to prohibit spitting in several hotspot areas around the city, including:

  • Jalan Kancil
  • Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman
  • Jalan Tun Tan Siew Sin
  • Jalan Lebuh Pudu
  • Jalan Petaling

The statement reads, “This operation aims to ensure that the level of environmental cleanliness is always maintained, especially in areas where the public is concentrated.”

“The monitoring results found that there were traces of spitting betel leaf residue on sidewalks, drain covers, garbage cans and premises walls, which pollute the environment and tarnish the image of the city,” DBKL clarified.

Stop spitting habits by ending betel leaf sales

They have since also advised and encouraged vendors to stop selling betel leaf products for chewing and spitting purposes, as spitting in public spaces is against the law.

DBKL stated, “Throughout the operation, advisory actions were given to individuals who were detected to be spitting in public places, as well as to premises owners to not sell or supply related materials that encourage such behaviour. This approach aims to increase public awareness of the importance of maintaining cleanliness and complying with the regulations in place.”

“DBKL stresses that spitting in public places is an offence and strict action, including enforcement and compounds, can be imposed if repeated offences are detected. The cooperation of all parties is essential to ensure that Kuala Lumpur remains clean, comfortable and liveable for all,” the city council added.
