Every year, Bangkok’s biggest Songkran celebrations are held on Khaosan Road and Silom Road but if you are thinking of heading to Bangkok this year to for the festivities, you may want to take note of these changes.
The Khaosan Road Business Association approached the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) for guidelines on the annual Songkran festival this year.

BMA advises the festival to observe the four No’s, which are “No powder, No water guns, No Sexy Dress, and No Alcohol.” But many clothes automatically gets rather sexy when it gets wet!
All entertainment activities, playing of loud music and the Songkran beauty pageant contests will be cancelled as well this year. Festival goers are discouraged from dancing and holding water gun fights as well.
But traditional activities such as water splashing, pouring of water on Buddha’s image and giving alms to monks will still be allowed.
According to Coconuts, BMA said that the water festival should be held in a much more sedate way compared to previous years’ festivities and adhere to Thai traditional ways as the country is still in mourning for their late king.
As for the other big celebration on Silom Road, there are currently no news about it yet, but we should speculate that it will be similar to the one on Khaosan Road.
There definitely won’t be much merrymaking this year, so if you are looking to party hard, the Songkran festival this year may not be the right place for you due to the mourning period.
