Filipino fast food franchise Jollibee Foods Corporation announced that it will open over 100 outlets in Malaysia throughout the next 10 years, following the opening of its first branch in Centre Point Sabah last December.
The fast-food brand began when it started selling burgers in the late 70s to rival McDonald’s when it opened in the Philippines in 1981 and has since then dominated the fast food market in its home turf.
Represented by a plump-cheeked bee donning a dapper chef’s hat and bow tie, Jollibee’s grand opening was the talk of the town with long queues, thanks to the sizeable Filipino community in Sabah.
Among the most notable products churned out by the franchise is its signature fried chicken known as the Chickenjoy, which impressed millions and most notably late celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain.
Anthony Bourdain calls the dishes at Jollibee as “Deranged yet strangely alluring.”
According to Dennis Flores, President and Head of JFC International Business for Europe, Middle East, Asia and Australia, Jollibee would add to the diversity of the Kota Kinabalu food scene.
“We know that Kota Kinabalu is a melting pot of many ethnic cultures and it is home to a diverse food scene.”
“We believe we can appeal to the diversity as what we have seen in other countries.”
Jollibee is currently the world’s largest and fastest growing Asian restaurant company and is certainly good news for fried chicken loving fans in Malaysia.
