With news of Bank Negara’s current governor possibly resigning soon, many are wondering who will be taking his place.

According to The Edge Markets, two candidates are currently being considered to take Tan Sri Muhammad Ibrahim’s place as Governor of Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) if he chooses to resign.

The first candidate is reportedly Datuk Nor Shamsiah Mohd Yunus, a former Deputy Governor who joined BNM in 1987 but left in November 2016 after her term ended. During her time at the central bank, she was involved in the financial sector resolution initiatives during the Asian financial crisis.

Meanwhile, the other candidate being considered is another former Deputy Governor, Dr Sukhdave Singh, who joined the bank in 1986 and was responsible for the Monetary and Economics Sector as well as the organisational development sector of the central bank during his time as Deputy Governor.

An anonymous government source had reportedly told Reuters that talks with Datuk Nor Shamsiah are currently being arranged, saying,

“Terms of his (Muhammad’s) exit are being discussed and an announcement on his resignation could come out as early as tomorrow (6th June).”

Yesterday (5th June), reports of Tan Sri Muhammad Ibrahim possibly handing over his resignation as Governor of Bank Negara began to surface. His rumoured resignation comes in light of a controversial RM2 million land deal that is believed to be linked to the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal.

Now, it has just been confirmed by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad during a press conference this afternoon that Muhammad Ibrahim has officially resigned.

Well, let’s see who will be taking over as BNM’s new governor!
