Meanwhile, 159 people across the country reportedly died due to road accidents during this period, while 49 people suffered serious injuries and another 118 suffered minor injuries.
Over 197,00 summons were also issued across Malaysia from 29th May to 6th June.
According to the New Straits Times, another worrying statistic saw a significant amount of road accidents involving motorcycles. Plus Malaysia Berhad’s (PLUS) chief operating officer Zakaria Ahmad Zabidi stated that 13 out of 18 fatalities on the highway recorded since the beginning of Op Selamat involved motorcyclists.
He was quoted as saying,
“PLUS strongly advises all motorcyclists to be extra vigilant and to ride safely, as the rate of fatalities involving motorcyclists on the highway is alarmingly high.”
Given these alarming numbers, we hope everyone travels safely on their way home this weekend, and if you’re driving long distances, be sure to take frequent breaks during your journey. Safe travels, everyone!
