Pakistan passes a landmark legislation on Wednesday (17 November 2021) in the form of an Anti-Rape Bill which will punish sex offenders convicted of multiple rapes with chemical castration. Furthermore, those found guilty of gang rape will be sentenced to death or life in prison.
As reported by CNN, Pakistani lawmakers also passed the law with aim to speed up convictions and impose tougher sentences on sexual assaults in the country. Previously, only less than 3% of sexual assault or rape cases result in a conviction in Pakistan according to a Karachi-based non-profit organisation ‘War Against Rape’.
The move comes following mass public outcry over a recent surge in rapes against women and children in Pakistan. Its citizens have been demanding for justice to be served for sexual assault victims.

The bill states that Pakistan’s government must establish special courts throughout the nation in order to expedite rape trials and ensure sexual abuse cases are decided “expeditiously, preferably within four months.”
Chemical castration is the use of drugs to reduce libido or sexual activity. It is a legal form of punishment in countries including South Korea, Poland, the Czech Republic and in some US states.
