Malaysians are going to the polls next month following the dissolution of Parliament by now-caretaker Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob and now, the political scene is heating up with many political parties gearing up to start campaigning for the 15th General Election (GE15). Social media is also abuzz recently with many netizens engaging in political conversations, voicing out their views and showcasing support for the political parties and leaders that they support.

Speaking of which, one particular netizen has gone viral recently when he expressed support for his political party of choice, as many would see it as ‘breaking the norm’ of the stereotypical supporters of political parties in Malaysia. Get this, the man, a Malaysian Chinese from Terengganu, Alex Chan Foo Yew supports the Malaysian Islamic Party or PAS and in the viral post, shared that he has no ulterior motive to support the party and even gave out several reasons behind the matter.

Taking to Facebook, Alex shared that a person recently asked him why he supports PAS even though he is not a Muslim and decided to write a post because a lot of people have also asked him the same question. Writing in Bahasa Malaysia in the local Terengganu dialect, Alex further asserted that yes, he is not a Muslim and PAS has never invited or forced him to convert to Islam and that the reason he is with the party is to help Chinese people.

Tadi ada orang tanya saya, bakpe pilih duk sama dgn pas padahal islam x sabit pun dgn saya, ya islam memang x sabit dgn…

Alex, who is also the Terengganu PAS Supporters’ Congress (DHPP) youth chief then asserted,

“Of course, you can help Chinese people by joining other political parties too but the reasons why I support PAS are simple. First, I agree with and support the principles that PAS fights for. Secondly, because they don’t have any court cases, no corruption, no stealing, no robbery,”

The post has since gone viral, receiving various shares and likes on Facebook and was even reposted by the PAS Terengganu official Facebook page. Besides that, Alex’s post also received the attention of PAS Deputy President and caretaker Minister of Environment and Water Dato’ Sri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man who lauded what the Terengganu Chinese man said. In a Twitter post, Tuan Ibrahim asserted,

“Chinese people help PAS because we have no corruption! Alex Chan Foo Yew, a Chinese man in Terengganu. He said that not one person from PAS forced him to convert to Islam. Alex chose PAS because he likes PAS’ principles, no court cases and no corruption. Alhamdulillah.”
