Parit Member of Parliament (MP), Ustaz Muhammad Ismi Mat Taib, is calling for the authorities to look into and take action against an event that took place at a school in Ipoh, Perak.

This is because the aforementioned event allegedly served alcohol to guests within the school premises.

Parit MP urges action against an event in an Ipoh school that served alcohol

Taking to his Facebook page, the PAS MP claimed that the event was a reunion dinner held by former students of the school last month (September 2025), with about 800 people in attendance.

He wrote, “This act is highly regrettable and completely unacceptable. Schools should be a space for the formation of character, morality and knowledge, not a place for activities that contradict religious, ethical and educational values.”

“I emphasise that the school administration cannot easily give consent or tolerate any activity in the school premises involving alcohol, especially when the school has a significant number of Muslim teachers and students. Such actions create a dangerous precedent and tarnish the image of the educational institution.”

In his post, he also included laws that disallow schools from being linked to alcohol or alcohol brands, such as:

  • The Ministry of Education Malaysia (MOE) issued a Special Circular No. 3 of 2018, which, among others, prohibits schools from accepting donations from companies producing alcohol, cigarettes, gambling and the like
  • The Cabinet has also agreed to maintain the ban, including guidelines, so that any activities or promotions related to alcohol do not take place on school premises
  • The MOE policy on the use of school facilities by outside parties should contain a clear ban on activities that are contrary to moral values and religious sensitivities

He also pointed out the religious aspect of things.

“This issue is not only seen from the perspective of Islam alone, but other religions in Malaysia also emphasise the dangers and harms of alcohol to individuals and society. In Islam, alcohol is clearly prohibited because it intoxicates and takes away the mind, as stated in Surah Al-Ma’idah verse 90, which states that alcohol is ‘an impurity from the work of Satan’,”

“In Christian teachings, many sects advise their followers not to get drunk, as mentioned in Ephesians 5:18, ‘Do not be drunk with wine, for wine incites debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit’,” he explained, while adding that Buddhism and Hinduism also have similar teachings.

Demand for action

He has since called for MOE to conduct a thorough investigation and for strict action to be taken against the organisation of the event, as well as against the school administration, should they have allowed for alcohol to be served.

He also insists that MOE review and enforce guidelines that disallow activities related to alcohol, gambling and cigarettes within school grounds.

“MOE must state a firm stance that school premises cannot be used as a venue for alcohol parties or activities that conflict with the country’s education policy. Schools must remain a noble place to educate future generations, not a stage for entertainment that corrupts morals.”
