The police have arrested 13 foreign factory workers in connection with a riot after a viral clip showed hundreds of foreigners blocking the road on social media.
Hilir Perak police chief Assistant Commissioner Dr Bakri Zainal Abidin stated that preliminary investigations revealed the riot originated from a fatal hit-and-run accident involving a foreign pedestrian at Batu 8, Jalan Changkat Jong last night (March 14).
Bakri mentioned that police were alerted to the accident involving the pedestrian through the Malaysian Emergency Response Services at 9:35 pm last night.
“Investigations indicated that approximately 1,000 workers from a nearby factory gathered at the scene, blocking traffic. The group assembled on the road, obstructing the flow of vehicles.”
“A team from the Teluk Intan police headquarters was deployed to calm and control the situation, which was fully restored by 2 am after all factory workers returned to their dormitories,” he said in a statement.
Following this, the police have arrested 13 workers to assist in the investigation. Bakri stated that the foreigners are being investigated under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting.
Regarding the hit-and-run accident, Bakri said the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
