And in other news, the Royal Malaysia Police warns Malaysians of yet another scam that has been shared on Facebook.

Just a few days ago (18 November), Facebook user Nur Khairunnisa Shaharum shared some screenshots of messages she received from an unknown number claiming that they had tried to register for a GoPayz account, but had typed in Nur’s number on accident. The scammer had asked Nur to send them the TAC and OTP she would recieve.

Fortunately for Nur, she was wary enough of the situation to refuse their request. But this didn’t stop the scammer from repeatedly sending her the same message over and over again until she had no choice but to block the contact.

However, the story doesn’t end there.

“The next day. I tried to make a withdrawal from the ATM. Failed. I tried an online transaction. Failed,” she writes on her Facebook post. “Turns out, the scammer had already tried to hack into my bank account. Maybank is really fast and proactive, so they instantly blocked my account.”

Following this incident, the Royal Malaysian Police shared Nur’s post on their official Cyber Crime Alert Facebook page, linking to an article by Sinar Harian detailing another incident on the same day as Nur’s Facebook post.

The article details the story of the 63-year-old victim from Kedah who had received a phone call claiming that they had registered for a GoPayz account under his number on accident (sound familiar?) under the alias of ‘Nurhidayah’. But unfortunately for him, he did not exit the situation as luckily as Nur did.

According to the Kedah police, the victim had only realised he had been deceived after receiving a call from his bank about multiple bank transactions from his account to a third party. 33 bank transactions were made from the victim’s account and a total RM88,379.94 was stolen.

Once again, we’d like to warn everyone to not give out personal information and TAC numbers to anyone other than yourself. If you receive an odd message or a phone call from an unknown number, you can use the Semak Mule app (or read about it here) to find out if the number belongs to a scammer!
