Update: As of 8.15pm, myBugerlab shares that they showed the authorities proof that their staff works there. Thankfully, the business was let off with a warning instead of the initial intention to fine them.

The business shared their story as a reminder to other business owners out there, especially initially when they asked the authorities, “where should the staff eat then?” and the response they’ve gotten was “Be smart. Hide.”

MyBurgerLab today shared updates on their official page that they were about to get an RM25,000 fine by the police for allegedly not following the SOP. The reason MyBurgerLab shared the incident on their page is to remind other business owners that things like these can happen to them too.

So what happened actually? Well according to a WhatsApp message shared together with the post, the police came to check the outlet and saw one of the staff eating in-store before starting his normal shift. Renyi Chin, co-founder of MyBurgerLab also mentioned that the staff was eating at the table at 5.15pm and his shift starts at 5.30pm. Because of this, they were requested to go to the balai with their SSM document where they were supposed to be slapped with an RM25,000 fine.

It is already hard for local businesses to keep themselves afloat. Having to face enforcement officers who can be so unsympathetic is simply heartbreaking. The fact of the matter is; the person ‘caught’ eating in-store is a actually a staff member having his meal before his shift starts.

Yes, MyBurgerLab can appeal so that the fine be reduced. For other business owners out there, let this be a reminder to be very careful with the SOPs so there’s no reason for the authorities to catch you off-guard.
