The D6 Division of the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (JSJ) has introduced an adoption programme for retired dogs from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) K9 units! They decided to launch the adoption programme based on the advice of a veterinarian.
According to a statement by the Kedah Police, the adoption process implements a strict screening procedure to ensure that only individuals who are truly qualified and able to care for the welfare of the K9s will be selected. With that being said, one of the K9s named Goran has found its forever home through this programme so far.
PDRM launches new programme that allows the public to adop retired dogs from their K9 units
They wrote, “This programme is considered historic because after 57 years of the establishment of the K9 unit in 1968, for the first time, retired K9s are allowed to be adopted as pets. It also supports the target of acquiring 25 new K9s every 2 years to strengthen the abilities of the unit nationwide.”
“As a pioneer, an 8-year-old K9 named Goran, a German Shepherd from Czechoslovakia, was handed over to Inspector Lee Sheng Wey from JSJ IPK Perak. Goran served for 6 years before retiring in July 2024.”
Goran’s achievements as a K9 under PDRM
Throughout its service, Goran recorded an excellent record, including detecting case materials at 60 crime locations, 213 crime prevention patrols, 40 public order control tasks and being involved in community policing programmes.
Among his important contributions was helping solve a murder case in Kuala Ketil, Kedah, in 2024.
