The lives of many Malaysians has been severely affected by the Movement Control Order (MCO) due to them losing their daily income. Fortunately, we’ve seen many good Samaritans who have risen to the occasion and helped out those who are suffering during the MCO. Celebrities and netizens alike are donating food supplies and money to the less fortunate so that their burden can be lessened during these tough times.

However, PDRM reported that those doing charity during the MCO is not a good excuse to violate the MCO itself.  According to Sin Chew, those who wish to do any charity act will have to report to the police, the National Security Council and the Welfare Ministry before they carry out their work or they will be arrested by the police.

Selangor Chief Police, Comm Datuk Noor Azam Jamaludin said that it is illegal for any individual or non-governmental organization to conduct charitable activities without approval during MCO.

“Any charity act without approval from the relevant authorities is considered a violation of the MCO and hence the person will face legal action.”

Subang Jaya District Police Chief OCPD Assistant Commissioner of Police Risikin Satiman clarified that it’s not that the police are against anyone doing charity now, they just don’t want a risk of any infection spreading which will inadvertently cause the MCO to be extended.

He also added that any charity act should comply with the latest procedures stating that there shouldn’t be a gathering and everyone should maintain social distancing. Volunteer guards should also be present so that the flow of people is controlled. Riskin even said that many have used the excuse of welfare activities to move around during MCO.

While it’s amazing that more and more people are coming forward to do charity during these trying times, please remember to obtain proper approval and clearance first. The police are looking out for us so let’s not take advantage of their kindness and let’s remember to always comply with the necessary precautions!
