The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has stressed that Malaysians visiting Thailand are prohibited from bringing back cannabis or while high on the substance when returning to our country. Despite Thailand has allowed the use or smoking of cannabis, it is still illegal in Malaysia and legal action will be taken against those who do so.

As reported by national news agency Bernama, Perlis police chief Datuk Surina Saad asserted that PDRM will take action against any individual bringing in cannabis into Malaysia, even those that are included a little in cakes or other foodstuff and drinks. She further said,

“We don’t have the power to prevent anyone from touring the neighbouring country and taking cannabis there but legal action can be taken under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 if returning with cannabis or under the influence of the drug,”

Surina also personally advised Malaysians to not try taking ganja while in Thailand even though it’s allowed there as the habit of smoking cannabis can be detrimental to health. The Perlis police chief also stressed that the agencies at the border had been asked to increase inspections to ensure that no one would bring into Malaysia any psychoactive drug like cannabis.
