The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has lauded the continuous enforcement and monitoring by Penang police and other enforcement agencies which resulted in the state now being free from large-scale illegal racing activities organised by mat rempits or illegal motorcycle racers. This is following the infamous tragedy which saw five men killed and two motorcyclists seriously injured after being involved in an accident caused by illegal racing earlier this year. The aforementioned incident involved several motorcycles and two cars on Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway on 17 July 2022.

As reported by Bernama, Penang police chief Datuk Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain revealed that since that incident, only several minor cases were reported involving dangerous riding by motorcyclists. Moreover, all of the perpetrators were detained for further investigation.

Mohd Shuhaily asserted,

“There were two or three arrests (involving mat rempit), but it was more about them trying to show off their superman-like stunts. We will not compromise and the police will apply to remand them,”

Speaking at a press conference yesterday, the Penang police chief also revealed that car thefts in Penang rose by 57.6 per cent to 104 cases to date in 2022. For comparison, only 65 cases were reported during the same period last year.

Moreover, motorcycle thefts also went up by 1.2 per cent to 515 cases in 2022 compared to 509 cases in 2021. Overall, vehicle thefts for this year in Penang have gone up by 9.9 per cent to 643 cases compared to 585 cases last year.
