3 men, including a heart patient, were arrested after they were believed to have been involved in producing and selling fake medical certificates (MCs) after the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) had investigated a police officer who frequently took sick leaves.

According to a report by Harian Metro, the Kuala Muda District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Hanyan Ramlan, shared that the fake MC syndicate was uncovered following information received from a review of suspicious MCs submitted by a police officer.

Acting on the information, his department raided a property in Taman Songket Indah, Kedah.

“A man in his late 40s was arrested. Also seized were about 20 fake medical certificates, a tablet, a laptop, a printer, a doctor’s stamp and A4 paper, believed to be used to produce the fake medical certificates,” he said.

The syndicate’s modus operandi

Assistant Commissioner Hanyan Ramlan further explained that the suspect was found to have been selling fake MCs for RM25 to RM30 for a day’s leave, without any health check-ups.

The suspect is believed to have been carrying out the fake MC business for the past 2 years and was using the name of a doctor who had previously treated him, though the suspect changed the doctor’s designation to a title of his own creation.

“Every time the suspect sought treatment at a hospital, he will remember the doctors’ names to use on the name stamp. Most of the names use real doctors but the job titles are not accurate,”

“The targets are civil servants and police officers who were caught presenting fake medical certificates, and are believed to have met the suspect at a restaurant near the hospital,” he added.

Following the arrest of the first suspect, 2 more men were arrested as they are believed to have been the middlemen who helped obtain customers to buy the fake MCs without seeking treatment.

This case is now being investigated under Sections 420 and 468 of the Penal Code, which are for cheating and forging documents.
