Previously, a video showing an ambulance stuck in traffic while traffic police gave way to buses carrying VIPs in Melaka had gone viral. The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has since clarified that the ambulance was in the right lane like other vehicles and had not activated its siren, which meant that it was not responding to an emergency.

Melaka Police Chief Datuk Dzulkairi Mukhtar added that in the viral video, officers from the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) of the Melaka Police Contingent Headquarters were carrying out escort duties for a Chinese delegation of incentive investors on 11 December at about 10:30 AM. As the ambulance didn’t use the left or activate its siren, the officers assessed that it was not responding to an emergency.

PDRM will summon the individual who circulated the video

Following this, Dzulkairi announced that the individual who circulated the video will be summoned, stressing that the police will not compromise with any slander attempts.

BERNAMA quoted the Melaka Police Chief as saying that he will personally look into the matter to ensure accountability.

“We welcome information from the public if it concerns police misconduct, but we reject any attempts to slander the police.”

“We will not compromise. I will personally look into this matter, and we will ensure that those who intentionally defame the police are held accountable,” Dzulkairi stressed.

He had earlier clarified that the traffic personnel seen in the video didn’t obstruct the movement of the ambulance and that the siren heard in the video was actually from the police escorting the delegation.

The individual who made the false remark may face up to RM500,000 fine, up to 2 years jail, or both

Accordingly, an investigation paper will be opened under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for the improper use of network facilities or services.

Those convicted under the legal provision, specifically Section 233(2) of the Act below, may face a fine of up to RM500,000 or imprisonment of up to 2 years or both. Moreover, they may also be liable to a further fine of RM5,000 for every day during which the offence is continued after conviction.
