Now that interstate travels are allowed again, Malaysian highways are now filled with vehicles again, especially with people eager to go on holidays after almost two years of being stuck at home. However, with the recent unpredictable weather in most parts of our country, if you’re going out for a long drive to get to your holiday destination, or for whatever other reasons, it is best to drive carefully and adhere to the traffic laws so that you can reach your destination safely.

Given how most places in Peninsular Malaysia are experiencing heavy rain and strong winds, the Traffic Department of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) shared a few tips on how to safely drive during heavy downfall. Taking to their official Facebook page, the PDRM traffic department shared 4 tips for driving in the rain:

1. Drive slowly and do not exceed 80km/h

This is because when a vehicle is speeding for more than 80km/h, it is more prone to ‘hydroplaning’ on the road which may make you lose control of your vehicle. This phenomenon happens because the tyres of your vehicle loses  grip of the road underneath it due to the wet surface, thus making your vehicle glide forward uncontrollably.

2. Do not tailgate too closely

The wet roads are slippery during rainfall, therefore if the vehicle in front of you brakes suddenly, you may not have enough time to stop before crashing into them.

3. Never turn on your hazard lights while driving

Your vehicle’s hazard lights are only meant to be used in case of an emergency and when your vehicle is immobile or stopped on the road.

4. Avoid driving on the right lane

When you drive on the right or fast lane, the vehicles driving on the opposite side may run into puddles and make water splash onto your windshield and potentially block your view. This is especially dangerous when you’re speeding and may cause you to crash into the cars in front of you.
