Just last week, Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that all SPM top scorers, regardless of race, will have a guaranteed spot for Matriculation.

Here’s why this is important.

Member of Parliament for Bayan Baru, Sim Tze Tzin, took to his Twitter page to share how he had written 79 appeal letters to the Ministry of Education (MoE) this year alone, to help straight A SPM students who were rejected from the university program that they applied for.

He wrote, “I believe all loving parents have said the same thing to our children, ‘If you study hard and score As, one day you can get into university‘. But, what if the child works really hard, scores ALL As but still fails to make it into Matriculation?”

“One father told me his daughter cried for days, heartbroken. As a father, I could feel her sadness. There is an injustice in the current system. To help the disappointed students, I write these kinds of appeal letters to the Ministry of Education. This year, I wrote a total of 79 letters!

He added that the 79 students with good results failing to enter Matriculation is merely the tip of the iceberg considering the amount of disappointed students who may not have reached out to him.

Though, he is happy with the Prime Minister’s announcement as it is a way towards positive changes in the education system.

“Finally, our PMX Anwar Ibrahim stepped in to help. He announced that all students with 10As and above, regardless of race and background, will get into Matriculation. He stepped in to correct an injustice in the system permeated for many years.”

“This is one of the best news for these disappointed students. The system is still not perfect, many more things need to be done. But, this is a first step in the right direction,” he added.

We’re truly happy to see this change in the policy as it will help a lot of hardworking students an opportunity to gain educational opportunities that they deserve.
