A project called ‘Dead Drops’ was started by Berlin-based artist Aran Bortholl in 2010. ‘Dead Drops’ is an anonymous, offline, peer to peer file-sharing network in public space. USBs were cemented to a hole in the wall, between gaps or even under objects, and anyone can plug their device in to share a file on it.
Simply prop your computer up to it, and explore what interesting files that may await you. You can even drop any files you wish to share.
Not all ‘Dead Drops’ are found on walls though.
One was place under the public telephone in a subway station.
Some got really creative, and well, placed it on the neighbourhood dog.
When this project was first launched, many expressed their excitement in the website’s comment section.
Then there’s this guy.
Up to date, the project has caught on to other countries, some of which includes, Spain, Mexico, Netherlands, Australia, China and even Indonesia!
