Just about a month ago, we saw a victorious Pakatan Harapan (PH) take over the 61-year rule of Barisan Nasional in a peaceful and miraculous way. Ever since then, PH has been working tirelessly to abolish old laws and implement new ones. Everyone was amazed at how fast our new prime minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, moved with investigations into cases, and the firing and hiring of certain people.

Things seem to be going good for Malaysia, but recently, our Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has come forward to tell the people to be patient as PH needs more time to fulfil the promises they made in their election manifesto.

He said that PH had taken over a heavily flawed administration that it has made it difficult for them to deliver the promises within 100 days, according to Free Malaysia Today.

“There is a huge burden on the government. We need to restore the world’s confidence. This needs a big commitment,” he said at Masjid Saidina Hamzah in Taman Batu Muda.

“I hope Malaysians will be a bit patient. Maybe there were a lot of things we promised in the manifesto and people expect them to be implemented immediately. We can do it if it’s easy. But we took over an ailing administration. We need to be patient.”

Not just Muhyiddin, but Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng also said that some promises in the manifesto might be delayed.

He had said this after critics said the country would go bankrupt if the goods and services tax (GST) would be abolished. However, Guan Eng added that PH has proven them wrong, reported Free Malaysia Today.

“During campaining, our opponents said the country will go bankrupt without the GST. We’ve proven them wrong, on June 1 we freed ourselves from GST, we didn’t go bankrupt,” he said.

“It shows our calculations were correct that we can do without the GST. But because our financial situation was worse than expected, some promises in our manifesto may be delayed, but we will deliver on them.”

Guan Eng also said that if the government were to fulfil all the promises with the country’s current financial situation, Malaysia would go bankrupt but PH isn’t going to allow that to happen. Phew!

And finally, from the man himself, Dr Mahathir conceded a few days ago, that PH would need more than 100 days to fulfil the 10 promises they made in their manifesto, and added that these promises were made with insufficient knowledge about the country’s condition. It was only when they took over that they realised the damage was worse than they expected.

“As such, we admit that me may have to take more than 100 days to complete these pledges. I hope the people understand that it is not easy to govern the country in its present state,” he said according to New Straits Times.

With the reasons explained above, let’s not make a big fuss about PH not fulfilling their promises in 100 days ok? After all, they have to undo a lot of damage, so let’s just be patient while we give them all the time they need.
