While the controversy surrounding dress codes in Malaysia have existed for a long time now, you’d be surprised to know that the Philippines has its fair share too. Recently, a woman by the name of Nancy Boroc shared her experience being barred from entering a government office because she was wearing shorts.
So what’s the issue here?
Well, Nancy is actually born without calves and feet, and she wore shorts because of her congenital orthopaedic disability.
In her post, translated by Coconuts, Nancy shared that she went to the government agency to submit a document for her sister. But as she reached the entrance of the building, she was stopped by the security guard who said,
“People wearing shorts are not allowed inside because of a new memorandum.”
To which Nancy questioned that it shouldn’t apply to someone with her disability. The guard sternly told her that she could not go in. The reality is, Nancy cannot wear long pants even if she wanted to. She explained to Coconuts,
“When we went there and he didn’t allow us inside, we weren’t able to ask for help from the other employees. So we went home first and then we went back to the BIR office at around 1pm to try our luck again. When we went back in the afternoon, the same guard, allowed us to go in.”
Suddenly, they allowed her to go in, and to her surprise, there were many individuals inside wearing only shorts and slippers too. So why wasn’t she allowed to go in earlier, even with her disability?

Nancy decided to share her experience because she wants to raise awareness towards persons with disabilities and their daily struggle. Hopefully, incidents like this do not happen to anyone else.
