A secondary school in Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya, Selangor, has started using metal detectors to conduct security checks on students as a proactive step to keep everyone safe.

The move comes after the recent tragic death of a student, which has sparked nationwide concern over safety in educational institutions.

Students were seen undergoing security checks using metal detectors

According to a social media post, school prefects allegedly conduct daily security checks each morning using handheld metal detectors to detect dangerous or prohibited items such as sharp objects, vapes, and unauthorised electronic devices that might be brought into the school grounds, Kosmo! reported.

The school reportedly carries out these checks respectfully and carefully to protect students’ privacy, stressing that the sole purpose is to ensure everyone’s safety.

As previously reported, a 16-year-old student tragically died after being attacked by a Form 2 student armed with a knife.

Following the incident, the Ministry of Education (MOE) announced the formation of a special committee to ensure the case is investigated thoroughly, fairly, and transparently.

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the suspect has been detained and that the ministry is fully cooperating with police. She added that counsellors and guidance teachers have been mobilised to provide psychosocial support to students, teachers, and the wider school community.

MOE will introduce a new ‘Pendidikan Karakter’ subject next year

MOE is currently preparing to implement the 2027 School Curriculum next year, which will introduce a new subject called Pendidikan Karakter (Character Education) as its core focus.

In addition, the MOE will increase the frequency of mental health screenings for students from once to twice a year to enhance overall student well-being nationwide.

According to Fadhlina, the new curriculum is designed to further strengthen students’ personal development, values, and moral character.

She added that the Healthy Mind Screening Programme aims to identify early signs of depression or emotional distress among students before they become more serious.
