Last month the Human Resources (HR) Ministry announced that it would be studying the issue of allowances for internships to take appropriate action.
The ministry stated that they would consider the views and needs of all the parties involved, including trainees in the industry and private sector players.
Following that, it now seems that some action has been taken as the prime minister recently announced that government-linked companies (GLC) offering internship positions will be required to pay an RM800 minimum monthly allowance to their interns.
“Interns are graduates but some companies either pay them a low wage or none at all. It’s true that they undergo exposure and training at companies, but if they come from underprivileged families, it’s hard for them to support themselves or their families.”
“To set a good example, the Finance Ministry has (instructed) all GLCs hiring students undergoing practical training or internships to pay them at least RM800 monthly,” he said during a keynote speech yesterday (July 14).
Anwar said that the step came following a suggestion by a Form Six student during a dialogue. “Although we take input from experts on the economy, students can also give good suggestions,” he explained.
However, Anwar did not announce when this would come into effect.
“As it is I think some companies are paying interns but the amount isn’t as close to RM800. Hence we got no timeline for implementation. We hope we can start this now or as soon as possible,” he added.
