The government recently announced that they had cut the allowances of national athletes. The decision drew backlash from members of the public.

However, much to the disapproval of Malaysians, it was recently announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob that the government is planning to allocate RM10 million to the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM).

In his speech at the groundbreaking ceremony for FAM’s new office complex in Putrajaya today (17 January), Ismail Sabri mentioned that the decision was made in hopes of emulating the blueprint of English Premier League side Chelsea and the Vietnam national team.

“Apart from improving the quality of players they increase the marketability and skills of those who eventually wear that blue jersey. This should be emulated by football clubs in Malaysia,” he added.

Decision drew backlash from netizens

Unsurprisingly, the decision has been criticised by Malaysians all over social media.

Many commented on how unfair it is that current national athletes have had their allowances cut, but yet, the government is willing to allocate tons of money into Malaysian football.

“An allocation of RM10 million to football will get it nowhere. But, successful athletes of other sports have had their allowances cut,” pointed out a user.

Some users even pointed out that the RM10 million would be better spent elsewhere to develop athletes who have the potential of becoming world champions.

“Not fair. This RM10 million would be better allocated to athletes who have the potential of winning medals and becoming world champions,” commented a user.

Another user said, “Just accept the fact that Malaysian football will go nowhere. Use the money to help improve our diving, hockey, rugby and badminton till we manage to get an Olympic gold.”
