On 23 July, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim made a special announcement about the BUDI MADANI RON95 (BUDI95) programme, which allows eligible Malaysians to purchase RON95 petrol at a lower price.

The programme was implemented in late September, whereby all Malaysian citizens with a valid driving licence can purchase RON95 at RM1.99 per litre. Eligibility is verified using MyKad, the same system used for the Basic Rahmah Contribution (SARA).

The BUDI95 programme has helped the Government save RM800 million!

Since the programme’s launch, the Government has saved RM800 million a month through BUDI95, according to the Prime Minister.

In a Facebook post, Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said the savings were achieved by targeting fuel subsidies more effectively, ensuring they benefit only Malaysian citizens.

“As a result of this bold step, we have saved RM800 million so far, and every ringgit has been returned to the people through Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) and SARA, as well as used to upgrade clinics and hospitals, improve roads, and strengthen the nation’s infrastructure,” he wrote.

He also noted that the move has helped curb leakages that previously involved over 3.5 million foreign nationals and the smuggling of tens of thousands of litres of fuel abroad.

BUDI95 is available to all Malaysians 16 and older who hold a MyKad and a valid driving license

Anwar noted that previous Governments had talked about targeting fuel subsidies for over 20 years, but none had the courage or political will to act until the MADANI Government stepped in with the BUDI95 programme.

Under BUDI95, all Malaysian citizens aged 16 and above with a MyKad and a valid driving license can buy up to 300 litres of RON95 fuel per month at RM1.99 per litre, compared to the non-subsidised price of RM2.60 per litre.

At the same time, vehicles with foreign registration will still be barred from buying RON95, although foreigners living in Malaysia with locally registered vehicles will be able to purchase it at the prevailing market price.
