Bribery is something that plagues our country and recently, a police officer has been found guilty of it.

According to BERNAMA, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in Kuantan, Pahang was sentenced to 2 months in jail and fined RM25,000, in default six months imprisonment by the Sessions Court.

It is said that he was found guilty and was sentenced for accepting a bribe of RM5,000 in relation to a drug case back in 2018.

“After listening to all the testimony of the prosecution and defence witnesses, the court found that the accused failed to raise reasonable doubt, as well as provide an explanation to break the presumption on the balance of probabilities,” the judge said.

He was charged under Section 17(a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, which, if found guilty, provides imprisonment of up to 20 years and a fine of 5 times the value of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher.

The court allowed for a stay of execution as the policeman, Hasbulla Ali Alias, 48, had filed for an appeal.

It is said that on 17 May 2018, Hasbullah Ali was an officer with the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department, Pahang Police Contingent Headquarters, when he received a bribe from a man at a restaurant.

The bribe was allegedly to be given to a Deputy Public Prosecutor for a drug case.
