This shall be a reminder to everyone to spend wisely. The prices of vegetables are expected to hike (again) as much as 80% due to the lack of supply.

In case you are wondering, the lack of supply is due to the damage to farms and crops in the aftermath of the flood that hit many states in the countries.

The Chairman of the Federation of Malaysian Vegetable Growers, Lim Ser Kwee, said that the flooding disaster has affected hundreds of hectares of vegetable farms and gardens in Johor, Melaka, Perak, Kelantan, and Terengganu.

He added that this has caused a significant shortage of vegetable supply, resulting in a sharp increase in prices, reported Harian Metro.

“This flooding disaster is quite severe, and it is estimated that more than 100 hectares of vegetable farms and gardens nationwide have been destroyed and submerged by floodwaters.”

The flooding in parts of Thailand also didn’t make the situation better, which contributed to the surge in vegetable prices which is estimated to be at least 50%, and as much as 80%.

“At the moment, plantation and vegetable farm owners are waiting for the floodwaters to recede before replanting, which is expected to take between one to two months.”

Despite the improving conditions of the flood, Lim highlighted that concerns about the second wave arose recently, especially for Johor which is expected to begin in mid-December and last until January 2025.

What do you think of the surge in the prices of vegetables?
