A group of 10 individuals were arrested for protesting and attempting to stop the demolition of homes at Kampung Papan in Pandamaran, Klang, Selangor, this morning (13 November).
According to a report by China Press, the 10 men and women, who are believed to be residents of the area as well as activists, allegedly engaged in a heated argument with law enforcement officers and obstructed public officials from performing their duties of demolishing the houses there.
This then led to their arrests, and they were subsequently taken to a police station for further investigations.
It is said that Pandamaran assemblyperson (ADUN) Leong Tuck Chee was also present at the scene to mediate and negotiate with law enforcement officers and the residents.
Where this all started
According to a report by Sinar Harian, a total of 20 houses in Kampung Papan have already been demolished to make way for a development project.
It is reported that the residents of the area were left shocked and surprised as there were houses that were still being occupied.
“The instructions were that only empty houses could be demolished, but there were also occupied homes that suffered the same fate,” a resident said, adding that the operation was carried out without clear instructions to some residents who still live there.
Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) deputy chairman S Arutchelvan, on the other hand, explained that the residents had previously been informed by the Selangor Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, that only empty houses would be demolished, but the party involved allegedly acted beyond the instructions.
“This action caused several families to lose their shelter, and they had to find temporary alternatives. Some tenants had to move in a hurry, while others did not have time to prepare,”
“We hope that the responsible party will consider the fate of the residents and comply with the Menteri Besar’s instructions,” he added.
