Many Malaysians are avid cyclists, though they’ve not exactly been given the proper tools to carry out their cycling activities.
And when we mean tools, we mean bicycle lanes in general, which is why we’ve seen an increase in conflicts on Malaysian roads between cyclists and other road users. Thankfully, it looks like the authorities are on the right track towards making a change.
As according to Bernama, the Ministry of Federal Territories is planning on changing motorcycle lanes in Putrajaya to bicycle lanes! This comes as an effort to make regional administration a bicycle friendly town.
Minister of Federal Territories, Tan Sri Annuar Musa said that they will be cancelling the roads used as motorcycle lanes in Putrajaya so that it can be changed into bicycle lanes.
“We have an area that was once built to separate motorcycle routes from other vehicles, however, there are not many motorcyclists in Putrajaya, which is why we want to modify the route to be used as a cycling lane,” he said.
He added the the bicycle lanes will include an outer circle of 34km and an inner circle of about 15km, which should be completed in a couple of months time.
Along with bicycle lanes, they also suggested other amenities for cyclists including a cafe, a workshop and spare parts store for bicycles. There will also be proper parking spaces for those coming from outside of Putrajaya for their cycling activities.
The same idea is also currently being suggested for Kuala Lumpur but due to this only being in the beginning stages, the authorities are still on the look out for a suitable lakeside location in the city center.
