A man from India received unexpected information from The Government Railway Police (GRP) regarding his stolen wallet that they had recovered after he reported it missing 14 years ago. Hermant Padelkar explained that in 2006 he was on a CMST-Panvel train travelling when he noticed his wallet was missing near Vash. Before it went missing, his wallet contained a Rs 900 and a Rs 500 note.
The GRP called him last April saying that they had finally found his missing wallet.
When Padalkar discovered that his wallet was missing all those years ago, he took immediate action to file a complaint. He would constantly follow up with the authorities but soon lost all hope and gave up his search.
“I followed this issue aggressively, but after a few months, I forgot about it. In April, when I got a call from the Vash GRP, I was really surprised,”
According to Mumbai Myanmar, Padalkar was unable to go to the GRP office until last week due to the Covid-19 lockdown. When he arrived there, an officer clarified that they were able to give him his wallet but could not return his Rs 500 due to the note no longer being a legal tender.
Unfortunately, Padalkar was not the first person to have this issue. The GRP recently caught a number of thieves for stealing dozens of Rs 500 from commuters.
The authorities have contacted the Reserve Bank of India to see if there is possibility of changing these notes but have yet to receive a response from them.
