As the current number of Covid-19 cases in Malaysia continues to rise, many of us may also have noticed that the dates on the calendar have come very close to the fasting month for our Muslim friends. And as Malaysians, one of the biggest and most popular events during the fasting period are the Ramadan bazaars, where you can find all sorts of mouth-watering food and drink for cheap.

However, according to The Star, Ramadan bazaar organisers have been urged to cancel them this year in light of the current situation in Malaysia. Johor Consumers Movement Association chairman Md Salleh Sadijo has urged the organiser of bazaars in Johor to consider the consequences of holding such large-scaled events, which usually attract hundreds of people within close proximity of one another.

According to Mr Sadijo, the well-being and health of the public should not be compromised, even if this may deny financial opportunities for traders to make extra income during the festive season, mentioning how these bazaars can be the perfect hotspots for Covid-19 to spread among people.

“Thousands of customers patronise the bazaars daily during Ramadan and the situation could be dangerous, ’’ said Md Salleh.

He has expressed hope that state authorities would consider issuing a directive to cancel this year’s Ramadan bazaars if the Covid-19 situation in Malaysia doesn’t improve by the start of the fasting month on 24th April 2020.
